Uneasy lies the head that wears the log

Whadaya call a man with a log on his head?
-Edward.

Whadaya call a man with 2 logs on his head?
-Edward Wood.

Whadaya call a man with 3 logs on his head?
-Edward Woodward.

Haven’t heard much of Edward lately, but mention of “The Wicker Man‘ lately made me think of him. It wasn’t long ago that I got a dvd of ‘Callan’ out of the library:

and even though it all looks a bit cheap, that just helps, and the scripts and the performances are dated in a fabulous way: the class warfare and the barely controlled rage of Callan always watchable:

These same characteristics made his Breaker Morant unforgettable, as is the film, with its last line:

“Shoot straight you bastards” echoing down the years.

Corseted and upright, his policeman stumbling into an island pagan cult in ‘The Wicker Man’ makes what could have been a silly film, real(I saw as the ‘b’ movie before ‘Don’t Look Now’ so it was quite an afternoon).

The ending, with him singing ‘The Lord is my Shepherd’ and with God and Christ abandoning him, was and is haunting :( or silly, depending on your mood) if you haven’t seen it, go and get the movie: don’t watch this:

His apotheosis came with the Equaliser, where he was all clenched jaw and Shakespearian and it was all good fun:

He is a man of so many talents:

so I will leave with a quiz question:

Q. Why has Edward Woodward got 4 D’s in his name?

  1. His mother had extremely large breasts?

  2. A Because otherwise he’d be Ewar WooWar (that’s got to be registered somewhere on the Equity books!

I loved Callum actually, it was one of those treat programs my Dad let me watch when I was a kid. It was dead hard. I remember Russell Hunter as Lonely the morose cabby too. Watching that opening credits again makes me realise just how Ipcress it really was. Breaker Morant is a top film too, very emotive and very damning. I was too young to watch The Whicker Man for anything other than Britt Ekland! But that ending is so amusingly OTT it’s worth watching again just for Christopher Lee’s arm waving!

I also have the whole album ‘This Man Alone’ – Edward Woodward Sings – found it in a dump bin at a junk shop in Deptford, paid 10p for it, his version of Eleanor Rigby must be worth double that!

    Q. What do you call a man with 4 legs on his head?

    A. Dunno but Edward Woodward would!

  3. *that should of course have been logs!
